Janjala Benebee Dking: A Fusion of Rhythms, Inspired by Legends
Janjala Benebee Dking was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Batuns, through Mr. Ebenezer Batuns. From an early age, his passion for music was evident. As a child, he discovered an innate ability to play the keyboard, a talent that blossomed without formal instruction. This natural musicality found early expression in the church choir, where he dreamed of leading his own band.

His musical journey took a dynamic turn in his secondary school years during the mid-80s, when he began playing percussion with local Fuji musicians. This experience highlighted his gift as a multi-instrumentalist and laid the groundwork for a diverse and rich career.

Janjala’s professional path led him to collaborate with esteemed artists, including the late Ade Olusayo, Admiral Dele Abiodun, and Segun Adewale. In 2000, he joined the legendary King Sunny Ade and the Africanbeats Band, where he performed until 2006, before migrating to the United Kingdom. During this time, he also began developing his own Juju band, releasing an EP titled “Triumph.” This EP showcased his versatility, featuring tracks that echoed the sounds of King Sunny Ade while also exploring his unique musical voice.
Throughout his formative years and career, Janjala drew inspiration from the titans of Nigerian music: King Sunny Ade, whose masterful Juju rhythms resonated deeply; Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose fearless innovation and Afrobeat spirit ignited his own creative fire; and Lagbaja, whose enigmatic persona and fusion of traditional and modern sounds broadened his musical horizons. These influences, combined with his own innate talent, shaped his unique musical identity.

His first recording, completed in 2008, was released in 2016 after unforeseen delays. However, feedback from fellow musicians highlighted that his musical style transcended traditional Juju, hinting at a more expansive sound.
From 2019 to 2022, Janjala’s artistic vision began to crystallize. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 proved to be a pivotal moment. During lockdowns, he began live streaming performances, showcasing his original lyrics and compositions. The enthusiastic response from his audience fueled his determination to forge a new path.

This period marked the birth of Janjala Benebee Dking’s evolution into a Fusion Afrobeat artist. Since then, he has performed at numerous shows, captivating audiences with his unique blend of rhythms and melodies. With a rich history, the profound influence of musical giants, and a forward-looking vision, Janjala Benebee Dking continues to explore new sonic landscapes, promising more exciting musical journeys to come.
